Researcher Chris Ketola identified the cause of death as Cordyceps, the notorious fungus that inspired the zombie-like infection in the TV series and video game The Last of Us. The fungus is known to take control of a host’s nervous system, manipulating its mind and movements. Chris explained, “It took over his nervous system and forced him to come to this location. And then as he died, the fungus sprouted out of his body, allowing the spores to spread to another unsuspecting tarantula.” Chris noted that while Cordyceps targets various invertebrates, the strain that infects tarantulas is particularly rare.
