| Video Discription | Missing climbing mountains in North America because it’s winter? Go climb in South America, namely Ecuador because it’s accessible & affordable to visit. Save these 5 things for when you plan your next trip to Ecuador 🙃 📆 Set aside a few days to acclimatise - Quito, Ecuador’s capital, is one of the highest capitals in the world sitting at 9,350ft (2,850m) above sea level, which makes it a great place to visit to acclimatise for the acclimatisation climbs, but you still should climb a few mountains around 16,000ft (5,000 m) to get your body ready for climbing taller peaks above 19,000ft (5,500m) like Cotopaxi or Chimborazo. 👨🏫 Go with a local guide - Guides are required for all standard route summits in Ecuador. Some mountains are more strict about checking for guides/permits than others once you get there. It’s really best to go with a someone who knows the mountains, weather patterns, & can speak the language. 🏔️ Stay at a hacienda - There’s some gorgeous haciendas near the base of most mountains. It’s great and affordable to stay a night at a hacienda before getting picked up by your guide because you’ll generally be closer to the mountains than if you were to stay in Quito. 📋 Check lodge amenities before you go - I was surprised to find out after lugging all my gear to base camp that a lot of the base camp lodges are really built out with pads, pillows, kitchens, bathrooms, etc. 💭 Know your body - Especially if you plan on climbing Chimborazo, which sits above 20,500ft (6,200m). With acclimatisation, I felt fine on climbs around 19,000 ft (5,500m), but the moment I got above 20,000ft I felt off.
