The culprit is named Sunil Gopi in the FIR, but people close to the family say his name is Sanal Gopi. On Saturday, R Giridharan, 36, of Thiruvalluvar Street near Gounder Mills, filed a complaint with DCB sub-inspector N Sambandam. Giridharan is a realtor and the owner of a sawmill. Sunil approached Giridharan on November 19, 2021, through his family friend Venkatachalam, to sell his 4.52 acres in Mavuthampathi, Madukkarai taluk, Coimbatore. Giridharan agreed to acquire the estate and sent 97 lakhs to Sunil, his relatives Reena, and her husband Sivadoss' bank accounts between September 28 and November 23, 2021. The land was officially registered on November 24, 2021. Following the land registration, Giridharan asked for an encumbrance certificate (EC) and discovered that a civil lawsuit involving the land he purchased from Sunil was pending before the court. On December 25, 2021, Giridharan approached Sunil with EC, and the latter agreed to refund the money within a month. Gridharan approached Sunil again on February 20, 2022, but this time he threatened him. The district crime branch police launched a case against Sunil, Reena, and her husband Sivadoss under sections 120 (B), 406, 420, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code in response to Giridharan's accusation. On Saturday, DCB inspector Rajeswari and her colleagues apprehended Sunil in Kozhikode. On Sunday, he appeared before a judicial magistrate and was remanded in judicial custody. Two other defendants in the case are absconding. |
