Thank you for watching Scary Animal Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the sun drenched beaches of Southern Australia. This area of the coastline consists of large granite boulders and dangerous reefs. There is a shallow shelf extending a short distance but the deep ocean is not far from the shore. The wildlife in the area include seals, and an enormous array of tropic game fish as well as the top predator in the ocean, the Great White Shark.
On December 8th, 1963 Rodney Fox was a 23 year old life insurance salesman from Adelaide Australia and the defending champion of the annual Aldinga South Australian Spearfishing Championship. After four hours of diving continually then hauling his catch to shore for weighing, he was told he was trailing and needed a large Dusky Morwong to catch up. It was worth more points in the competition and a big one would help him close the gap on the leader.
Rodney knew that no other spearfishermen in the competition had gone to the point past the reef to where the depth drops off to about 25 yards and he ran toward the beach and dove in headed there.
Well luck, be a lady! Rodney spotted a big Dusky Morwong hanging out in the rocks of the drop off and he slowly started stalking up. He knew the behaviors of this species and that before they darted off they flick their tails in nervous motion. This fish had not done that and didn’t seem overly alarmed at Rodney’s approach. He slipped in slowly, closer and closer with his finger on the trigger of his speargun.
Just as Rodney began squeezing the trigger he was slammed by an enormous force from his left side and felt himself traveling through the water at a very high speed. His facemask and his gun were knocked from him by the impact and current. He was convinced he must have been hit by a submarine. He felt the alternating surge produced by the tail of the gigantic Great White Shark that clamped onto the left side of his chest. His legs dangled helplessly along the shark's side as it hauled its latest meal into deeper water.
As Rodney became more oriented to the circumstance he was in he could feel the immense pressure from the shark bite which had clamped onto his chest. He knew he had to do something to make the shark release him so he used his right hand to grope around the side of the shark's head gouging as he searched. He must have hit the shark in the eye as it released its grip on him. He stuck his right arm out to push off the shark and accidently stuck his arm in its mouth. Before it could bite again, he tried to pull his arm out but mistakenly raked his own hand over the shark's lower jaw lined with razor sharp teeth. He then jerked his hand up and away hitting the shark's upper jaw of teeth. These two actions severed several tendons on both sides of his right hand and shredded it rendering it nearly useless. Rodney knew he had to keep the shark from biting him again so he tried to wrap his arms and legs around the shark's body, but it was way too big for him to do this.
Rodney kicked his way up to the surface and was completely out of breath from the attack. He surfaced and gulped and breathed desperately realizing he was in the middle of a rapidly growing pool of red colored by his blood. Suddenly a massive gray head poked from the middle of the red water chomping its jaws after Rodney. He tried to kick the shark but missed. The shark quickly turned his head toward Rodney’s buoy full of fish and swallowed it whole.
The shark then turned downward and back toward the deeper waters. As the shark was swimming away Rodney realized that the buoy was tethered to his lead weight belt and quickly took a few breaths in preparation of what he knew was next. The shark pulled the rope tight and again, Rodney was being quickly pulled through the water but now into very deep water. The water roared past his ears as he descended deeper and deeper with the shark. He grasped desperately around his weight belt searching for the quick release but his consciousness began to fade as things turned fuzzy. He was losing the battle and began to accept defeat when the rope snapped a few inches away from his weight belt. The shark had partially cut it during the attack and weakened it just enough for him to get away.
At the top of the water, nearby fishermen could see the disturbance in the water and the growing pool of blood. As soon as Rodney surfaced, they were right there and hefted him aboard. As they pulled him aboard his stomach and intestines spilled from Rodney's gut and onto the boat floor.
