Read Rishi Shahs profile below. Rishi Shah's father is a doctor, and the younger Mr. Shah spent a fair chunk of his childhood in the waiting room of his father's office. It was time well-spent, as he later drew on his experiences to develop the idea behind ContextMedia Inc., the Chicago health care marketing firm he founded in 2006. ContextMedia has developed a waiting room TV network that provides focused programming for patients, interspersed with advertisements from pharmaceutical companies. Both the programs and the ads are vetted by the doctors. ContextMedia's Diabetes Health Network already is in the offices of more than a quarter of the nation's diabetes specialists; a heart health network for cardiologists is in the pilot stage. Mr. Shah expects revenue to exceed $3 million this year. "This is a perfectly sensible investment for the pharmas because they're playing in front of the perfect target audience with the added authority of doing so in their physician's waiting room," says Betsy Gelb, founder of the Institute for Health Care Marketing at the University of Houston's Bauer College of Business. "Patients watch with the good feeling that their doctor would not have allowed this to be there if it wasn't a good idea for them to see it." The notion that everybody gains from ContextMedia's programming is what drives Mr. Shah. "We benefit every stakeholder that we touch — advertisers, doctors, patients, investors — and because of that, we have their support," he says. "I think this is part of a new type of capitalism that's more helpful, more empathetic." Steve Hendershot SOMETHING GOOD: "Tough times make people think. People create and reinvent when they might not have otherwise. As you do that, you pick up good ideas that otherwise wouldn't have gotten a shot," Mr. Shah says. "The silver lining for us is that if you have a good idea that helps your customers do business better, this is a good time to go to the marketplace." |
