Hello everyone! A warm welcome to the live coverage of the third day's play of the second Test between the hosts West Indies and the visitors South Africa at Providence Stadium Guyana. South Africa quickly removed West Indies’ 8th and 9th wickets in the morning but faced resistance from a crucial 40-run partnership between Jason Holder (54*) and Shamar Joseph who reduced the deficit as West Indies were bowled out for 144.
South Africa with a 16-run lead started well adding 79 runs for the first wicket before Tony de Zorzi fell to Jayden Seales. In the third session West Indies briefly regained control with three quick wickets but an unbroken 84-run stand between Kyle Verreynne (50*) and Wiaan Mulder (34*) stabilized South Africa's innings. Jayden Seales shone with the ball for the hosts bagging three wickets while Gudakesh Motie grabbed two wickets.
South Africa are 223/5 leading by 139 runs. Verreynne and Mulder will aim to build on their momentum from the second day and push the hosts onto the back foot. Meanwhile the West Indies will look to break this partnership and wrap up the innings as soon as possible. The second day has come to an end in this second test between West Indies and South Africa. The day has once again belonged to the visitors as they are 223/5 at the end of 70 overs and lead by 239 runs.
With the sun beating down and green outfield the South Africans won the toss and elected to bat first! However it was not the way to go as the West Indian pacers led by home Tests debutant Shamar 5/33 tore apart the South African batting order. It's moving day in this Test match but the game has already moved significantly in the first two days. Bowlers have relished their time at Providence Stadium with 17 and 8 wickets falling on the first and second days of play.
Windies are reeling as well. They are 97 for 7 after bundling out the SA team for 160. Seales and Joseph accounted for the 8 off the 10 wickets. And SA never had many answers to the duo. But then Windies came out to bat and the Burger-Mulder show started. The pacers had a field day today after both teams had opted for two regular spinners in their line ups during the toss. But the ball has moved considerably. It it hard for batting but it might ease out on day 2.
Draws are draining out of Test cricket. The stalemate West Indies and South Africa reached at Queen's Park Oval on Sunday a product of the unfortunate alchemy of a uselessly slow pitch and rain that took 148 overs out of the match is the only draw in the 22 men's Tests played this year. Ten of the 22 players had never been involved in a draw and only one of them - Keacy Carty - was on debut. Granted seven of those 10 have yet to earn 10 caps.
But the other debutant drawers Markram Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder have played 38 - 19 and 13. The number of draws has been in the single figures each year from 2014. In the 10 previous years it was below 10 only in 2007 when it was nine. In the 1970s - 42.42% of Tests were drawn. Will the visitors learn the lesson of not picking two spinners for the first Test? If they do Mulder should make way for Piedt. Maybe instead of turning up on Thursday plan a trip to the Kaieteur Falls.
That went up to 45.86% in the 80s but came down to 35.73% in the 90s and 26.94% in the 00s. Can we blame batting tendencies arising from the growth of white-ball cricket for the decline of the draw? Perhaps and if we do we should also thank white-ball cricket. Watching one team try to hang on with their last pair at the crease while the other team are desperate to take that last wicket invariably is riveting stuff. But how often does that happen?
