Like loads of supplements, and they don't usually know the names, doses, or even why they're taking a specific supplement. Usually it's because "I heard it's good for you." At Harvard and Stanford they didn't teach us how to deal with this problem. They just blow off these patients, which isn't fair, because they're just trying to feel better. The big problem is what if those supplements are actually making you sick.. And even to the point where you need to end up in the operating room for something. That could be serious, because we're talking ventilators, breathing tubes, powerful meds, possibly being in a medical coma. And I'm concerned for any kind of med, natural or not, I don't care. Meds are powerful when needed, and harmful when not needed! So I totally support herbs and supplements over meds whenever possible, but having bags of pills is insane, because this can be dangerous. And what's totally not cool is that people push these pills all over the internet, social media, TV ads, you name it. And it's not only pills, it can be aromatherapy, essential oils, probiotics, whatever. The easiest way to spot these scams is if someone's trying to sell something to you without knowing who you are! âIt is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than what sort of a disease a patient has" - this is one of the foundational concepts in medicine. It's totally lost with direct to consumer advertising. "But supplements are safe and cheap." Haha, that's not true! Two main reasons: 1) People taking meds may have less drive to change their habits. This can worsen the underlying problem! Particularly, it can worsen chronic disease states. 2) Questionable safety of processed herbal preparations (like any medications). Blind recommendations for supplements can cause heavy metal poisoning, medication interactions, surgical implications, adulteration, overdoses/mislabeling, unnecessary long duration of use, etc. Keep asking your questions and don't fall into these traps.
