| Video Discription | CINCINNATI (WKRC) - New questions are being raised about the Zika Virus as people find out it's a more dangerous virus than previously thought. Local 12 News sat down with Dr. Stephen Blatt at Good Samaritan Hospital to try and find out why that's true. He said it was partly because there was now more of an established link with microcephaly which causes brain problems due to small heads in babies. But also it was because the mosquito that carries the virus was quite present in the United States and may spread more easily than people have known up until now. "I think if there's transmission within the United States this summer women should be cautious, and really try to avoid mosquito exposure at all costs if they are planning pregnancy," said Dr. Blatt. There's a bit of controversy about whether or not women should delay a pregnancy due to zika concerns. But one thing for sure, just like with the West Nile Virus, preventing mosquito bites with the help of insect repellent with Deet, proper clothing, and removing standing water is going to be critical to anyone who is pregnant or planning a pregnancy. It's unknown, according to Dr. Blatt, just when the virus is most dangerous to an unborn baby. It may be in the first trimester, but nobody knows for sure. Since people likely won't have a vaccine against the Zika Virus for quite awhile, Dr. Blatt said the other thing that was critical was to stopping the spread is to avoid sexual transmission of the virus. As the mosquitoes bite, an infected person can then infect others. |
