| Video Discription | An inflammation of the liver caused by infection with the hepatitis E virus (HEV), a positive-sense, single-stranded, nonenveloped, RNA icosahedral virus. It is a type of viral hepatitis. (Diseases that occur in other places than the liver.) • acute pancreatitis (HEV genotype 1: Isolated from tropical and several subtropical countries in Asia and Africa.) • neurological complications: Guillain-Barré syndrome, brachial neuritis, acute transverse myelitis, and acute meningoencephalitis. • glomerulonephritis with nephrotic syndrome and/or cryoglobulinemia • mixed cryoglobulinemia • severe thrombocytopenia (Transmission) • Mainly fecal-oral route (Incubation period) • 2-8 weeks (averagely 40 days) (Symptoms) • fever, fatigue • itching, skin rash, joint pain • nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain • jaundice, dark urine, pale stool • hepatomegaly The condition is temporary and the patients recover with low death rates. It can be more severe in pregnant women and people with a compromised immune system, with substantially higher death rates. In pregnant women, especially in the third trimester (fulminant liver failure), with death rates around 20%. (Diagnosis: Blood tests) • IgM antibodies to HEV • HEV RNA (Treatment) • Not necessary as the disease is usually self-limiting. • ribavirin: For immunocompromised people. • Reducing immunosuppressive drugs for people with solid-organ transplantation. (Prevention) • sanitation • vaccine (only in China as of 2021) • Avoid transfusion transmitted infection: Screening blood products before use. All of the hepatitis viruses (A to E) can be transmitted through blood transfusion. • Avoid uncooked/undercooked pork and deer meat: Reduces the risk of HEV genotype 3 transmission.
