Muscles affected would be trigger points in the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, scalenes and suboccipital extensors. This can be worsened by intervertebral disc pathology, poor posture, neck injuries, whiplash, stress, chronic spasm of the scalp, neck, or shoulder muscles. Sometimes the diagnosis is missed and other diagnoses of vascular pathologies of the neck, intracranial pathology, neck instability or occipital neuralgia is made.
