The Pickens Sisters--Helen, Jane, and Patti--are from Macon, Georgia. Other singers from Macon include Little Richard, Otis Redding, and Lena Horne.
Their father was a cotton broker who also played piano.
Their mother taught the girls to sing and harmonize.
The family moved to New York City in 1932, and the trio enjoyed their greatest success in the 1930s. They recorded over two dozen titles for Victor from early 1932 to late 1934.
They were in films, including Sitting Pretty (1933), 20,000 Cheers for the Chain Gang (1933), and Good Luck--Best Wishes (1934).
The Pickens Sisters followed in the tradition of the Boswell Sisters and would influence the Andrew Sisters.
Jane Pickens lived from August 10, 1907, to February 21, 1992. She lived to age 84. Her first husband was William C. Langley. She later married Walter Hoving, who owned Tiffany & Co. in New York, and they lived in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1972 she ran as New York's Republican candidate for the U.S House of Representatives, but she lost to incumbent Edward Koch.
Helen had the deepest voice in the trio and was the first to leave show business. Helen Pickens was born on July 10, 1910. Her first husband was Salvatore Curione. She later married Thomas W. Acheson. She died in August 1984 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The youngest sister was Patti, born on December 20, 1917. She married tenor Robert Simmons, and around this time the group officially stopped working together in show business. She died at age 77 on November 16, 1995. She is buried in Durham, Pennsylvania.
A fourth sister was not seen in the many photographs of the PIckens Sisters. This was Grace, the oldest (born on April 24, 1905). She was the group's manager. She died at age 77 on December 15, 1982, in Springtown, Pennsylvania. |
