By itself, a split system heat pump can operate down to around 35° F, and will then switch to auxiliary heat mode using electric heating strips, which leads to higher electrical usage and ultimately much higher electric bills, in cold months. Dual Fuel systems avoid this by pairing a high efficiency furnace that communicates with the heat pump through an outdoor temperature sensor. Once freezing temperatures approach, the sensor automatically signals the system to switch over from the heat pump to the furnace to heat the home, based on the temperature balance point programmed into the thermostat.
