Con la batalla de Ayacucho, en 1824, se había puesto punto final a la dominación española pero aún sobrevivía otra dominación, la de los brasileños en la zona de la Banda Oriental, llamada por los colonizadores Provincia Cisplatina. La misma databa de 1820, cuando empezó siendo dominación portuguesa y que luego, con la independencia de Brasil de Portugal, pasó a manos de los brasileños. Al enterarse del resultado de la batalla de Ayacucho, Lavalleja decidió redoblar los esfuerzos para conseguir la soñada independencia. La idea era reunir una fuerza expedicionaria que se dirigiría a la Banda Oriental para liberarla del dominio brasileño. De eso resultó la conformación de un grupo de treinta y tres hombres que por agua emprendió viaje a territorio oriental. Embarcaron en dos lanchones en San Isidro, un poco al norte de Buenos Aires, en las nacientes del Río de la Plata. Se internaron hacia el delta del Río Paraná, navegando sobre todo en la noche, a fin de eludir los patrullajes brasileños. Su primer destino fue la isla Brazo Largo, donde acamparon cuatro días, transcurridos los cuales decidieron que era el momento de intentar el cruce hacia la costa oriental del Río Uruguay. La empresa fue exitosa ya que el 19 de abril de 1825 los treinta y tres orientales estaban poniendo sus pies en la Playa de la Agraciada. En el camino se les fueron uniendo otros contingentes de milicianos y el grupo logró ocupar primero Dolores y luego Villa Soriano.
