McFarland returned to New York by Sunday night, only to be greeted by the FBI at 5 a.m. Monday. He described this as the "scariest moment ever," recalling how his doorman attempted to help him escape, ultimately leading to a brief standoff before he met the FBI agents in the lobby. Days prior, following the festival's cancellation, an investor aggressively warned McFarland that his failures would land him on the front page of The Wall Street Journal in handcuffs. Despite McFarland’s efforts to address the demands from the investor, it was too late. The festival's failure went viral, attracting federal scrutiny and culminating in McFarland being served with subpoenas and, about six weeks later, his arrest. |
