The big advantage of the trap is that it is passive, which means it does not require power or supplemental attractants like CO2 or chemical lures. This gives you great flexibility in deployment and easiness in handling. First, Dr. Scott Gordon fills the black bucket with water up to the drainage holes. As oviposition attractant, he inserts hay infusion or other organic material such as yeast, rabbit chow or dried oak leaves. Dr. Gordon puts the catch bag over the transparent chamber and tightens the fit with the ring. Then he places the transparent chamber on the bucket. Finally, he inserts the black funnel in the chamber. Female mosquitoes attracted by water and oviposition cues, enter the transparent chamber through the funnel. The catch bag provides a barrier between mosquitoes and the infused water. In the chamber, mosquitoes try to escape through the translucent windows and fly around. To kill the mosquitoes, you can use several methods: The first is a residual insecticide spray. And this can be applied to the inside of the transparent part of the trap right here. Just a light coating The disadtvantages of using a residual spray are that it is a little messy and of course you are using a pesticide and you have to deal with possible resistance issues. A second method, more affordable , is to use a light cooking oil such as canola oil. And this can be applied with a paper owl to the inside of the transparent part of the trap. Just wipe on a very light coat of oil and this will cause mosquitoes flying around inside the trap to get stucked at the inside wall of the transparent section. A third option which we recommend is the use of sticky cards which are available from Biogents. The sticky card has a small hole on the top of the card which will allow to hang from a little hook here. So, in order to deploy this, there is a little disc in the top of the transparent chamber that needs to be poped out. Then the hook is inserted. And the sticky card is a double sided sticky card and it is very effective. Where to place? Positioning of the trap depends on the species that you want to collect. Positioning to collect Aedes albopictus can differ from positioning to catch Aedes aegypti. The trap needs to be placed at a shady, humid and wind-protected location, for example here in residential areas. Please note that the BG-GAT should be readily visible for the mosquitoes. So, do not hide the BG-GAT in the bushes. A possible location can also be near resting sites of mosquitoes, near bushes or in natural environment under overhanging bushes. Because Ae. aegypti are often found living much closer to humans and often rest and even breed inside the house, GATs targeting this species can be placed in protected areas next to the house or even inside. The service interval for the GAT will depend on weather conditions and mosquito abundance. Replace the sticky card on a regular basis or when it is full. By wrapping the card in plastic wrap you can easily add collection information and transport the cards back to the lab for identification. Oils, residual surface sprays on the transparent chamber should be reapplied at least monthly. The water infusion should also be replaced at on a monthly basis. When temperatures are high servicing of the traps may need to be more frequent It’s affordability, user-friendliness, and the fact that insecticides can be avoided, all this together makes the BG-GAT the perfect tool for collection of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti. |
