| Video Discription | In this video you see a ranking from the worst to the best result of all Russian Eurovision entries. The ranking is based on both placements and amount of points. Pause the video during the info-texts in the beginning to read more about how I have calculated the ranking. Feel free to ask any questions! Russia made its revolutionary debut in 1994. A contest that originally was formed to create peace among the west European countries, was now joined by the former common enemy. Their presence in the 90s was kinda laid back, but in the 2000s the political controversies were visible. The televoting was claimed to heavily favour Russia, due to neighbour voting. When Russia hosted the 2009 contest months after invading Georgia, many thought it was inappropriate. What they didn’t know was that eventually Georgia would be kicked out after trying to send an anti-Putin song and the Russian army would perform next to tanks as an interval act. While passing along anti-lgbt laws, condemning winning drag artists and annexing Crimea they sent three peace-songs in a row. The artists received boos from the audience. An interesting turn of event was Manizha that was threatened to death for man hating, somehow was sent to compete in 2021. Her female empowering “Russian Woman” ended ninth. Maybe Russia has become closer to Western principals? No. Manizha was the last participant for Russia. In 2022 Russia was set to participate, but was kicked out of the contest, after Ukraine and some northern countries’ broadcasters pushed the EBU. Following the cancellation, all Russian broadcasters left the EBU, which means we won’t see Russia back for a long time. We can conclude that they were very successful. One victory, nine top three-places and only two non-qualifications in only 24 attempts. |
